Perched above the Gironde Estuary just north of Saint-Estèphe, Château Sociando-Mallet occupies the same privileged terrace of Gunzian gravel found at illustrious neighbours such as Montrose, Léoville Las Cases and Latour. Yet despite consistently outperforming many classified growths in blind tastings, it has never sought — nor needed — the validation of the 1855 classification. The estate was transformed by the legendary Jean Gautreau from 1969 until his passing in 2019, and continues under the same uncompromising standards today.
The 2023 vintage rewarded Sociando-Mallet's naturally cooler microclimate — temperatures here run two to three degrees cooler than Margaux to the south, allowing for slower, more precise ripening. The entire vineyard was harvested by hand, with Merlot picked early to preserve freshness. The final blend of 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, fermented with native yeasts, delivers a wine of classic restraint and purity.
On the nose, bright cassis and cherries lead, framed by pencil shavings, toasty oak and a signature cool minerality — the unmistakable hallmark of this remarkable gravel terroir.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, lively and classically structured, with refined tannins, bright acidity and a long, penetrating finish of dark berry fruit, cedar and graphite. Approachable from 2028, with serious ageing potential through 2042.
The insider's choice for world-class Bordeaux without the classified growth price tag.
